Tooth-Colored Fillings and the Rise of Aesthetic Dentistry

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), tooth-colored fillings have become more popular than amalgam (silver) or gold fillings, because of their aesthetic appeal.

The Rise of Aesthetic Dentistry in the US

A 2022 study found that 90.7% of dental practitioners believe the demand for aesthetic dental procedures is increasing, largely due to social media. The survey, accessed from the National Center for Biotechnology Information, reports that the most requested procedures were:

  • Teeth whitening (54.7%)

  • Hollywood smiles (17.1%)

  • Dental veneers (11.9%)

  • Invisalign (10.4%)

According to the study, all of these were influenced by social media trends. And, nearly half of the dentists used social media to promote their work, including sharing before-and-after photos. The study concluded that demand for aesthetic dentistry is rapidly growing, where the white smiles of celebrities and influencers inspire people.

Tooth-Colored Fillings Rising in Popularity

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), tooth-colored fillings have become more popular than amalgam (silver) or gold fillings, because of their aesthetic appeal. In a society that values a bright, white smile, many people prefer fillings that match the natural color of their teeth.

The ADA says composite resins, commonly known as tooth-colored fillings, offer excellent durability and fracture resistance, making them ideal for small to medium-sized fillings that endure moderate chewing pressure. These are suitable for front and back teeth, making them an excellent option for people who want a more natural-looking white tooth filling.

A tooth filling can be costly. But at Altogether Dental, we believe quality dental care, including cosmetic treatments like white fillings, should be accessible to everyone.

What Are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

When your dentist finds a cavity from tooth decay, your dentist will explain your tooth filling options:

  • Composite resins or porcelain: These are the tooth-colored fillings that have become more popular.

  • Amalgam: The Food and Drug Administration explains that silver amalgam fillings are not pure silver. Amalgam contains a mixture of metals; however, the “silver filling” moniker remains because of the color.

  • Gold: The ADA says gold inlays are comprised of a mixture of metals.

The most obvious way that composite fillings differ from the other types is in color. Silver and gold fillings are much more noticeable than composite resin or porcelain dental work.

Tooth-colored fillings offer excellent durability and fracture resistance, making them ideal for small to medium-sized fillings, the ADA says. These fillings are suitable for front and back teeth.

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

The Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) reports that tooth-colored fillings are an excellent option for those who prefer a more natural appearance. It reports other advantages of white fillings, including:

  • Material: Composite and resin materials are free of mercury.

  • Appearance: These fillings look more natural.

  • Adhesion: Composite fillings require less removal of the healthy part of the tooth because the material bonds to teeth adhesively.

  • Durability: These fillings can withstand chewing on back teeth.

How Tooth-Colored Fillings Are Changing Dental Practices

Modern advancements in dental dental treatments and techniques are providing more opportunities to achieve natural-looking, aesthetically pleasing smiles. Researchers, often dedicating decades to their work, continue to develop innovative materials like ceramic and plastic compounds that closely replicate the appearance of natural teeth, JADA says.

Additionally, the 2022 study found that more dentists include cosmetic dental consultations in their practices.
